Much of the mass market works with oil diluted in water or alcohol, then evaporated by heating or ultrasound. Each of these interventions alters the composition.
Heat destroys the volatile top notes first, citrus and fresh accords disappear before anything else. What remains is the heavier base, which explains why inexpensive air fresheners all begin to smell alike over time.
Water brings a second problem: humidity in the room and a medium for bacteria in the reservoir. Systems that use water therefore require regular cleaning, which in practice rarely happens.
Two-fluid nebulisation works differently. Compressed air breaks pure oil into micro-particles at room temperature. The composition survives intact, and the particles are fine enough to stay suspended rather than settling on surfaces.
