Scent zoning in a hotel: lobby, spa, corridors

Illustration for the article “Scent zoning in a hotel: lobby, spa, corridors”

The lobby carries the hotel's scent signature, this is where the most characteristic composition belongs. It is where a guest forms a first impression, and where the fragrance should be recognisable.

The spa calls for the opposite: a composition that recedes. Woody and fresh accords at low intensity sustain a sense of cleanliness without competing with treatment oils.

Corridors and lifts are transitional spaces. A lighter version of the lobby scent works here: enough to connect the two, light enough to stay comfortable in an enclosed volume.

The restaurant is a special case: scenting there should be minimal or absent, so as not to conflict with the food. Bars and lounges are the exception.

In practice this means three to four zones at different intensities and two or three compositions, rather than one system running at maximum.
